ESL Professional Advisory Committee
Mission: The Michigan English as a Second Language (ESL) Professional Advisory Committee provides ESL adult educators with opportunities for sharing ideas, resources, and information on state and federal requirements. The committee creates, promotes and facilitates professional development to improve instruction for increased student learning. The committee strives to increase support of ESL adult education through advocacy. Vision: The Michigan ESL Professional Advisory Committee will bring awareness to the English as a Second Language (ESL) field regarding issues related to ESL and the diverse populations we serve. Through professional development, sharing of ideas, curriculum, and information, our purpose is to provide resources to support the field to make Michigan a leader in the nation for adult ESL instruction. Why do we do this? The ESLPAC created standards for ESL for the state that was used for many years When the state moved to mandate CCRS we knew it was a cumbersome tool for the field We have worked for three years in creating this tool and to make it easy for instructors We worked with the awareness that it is difficult to change what you have been doing! We also know there are changes in CASAS so that it aligns with the CCRS
4
Structure We looked at our old tool which was simple and based on mastery of specific skills at each level With the CCRS, we restructured the format to include academic and pre-career and employment applications Created Competencies in each anchor/standard The intent is to give instructors flexibility and maintain creativity in the classroom with added rigor
5
Alignment with CASAS For the new reading test, CCRS will play a major role in the process Let’s look at samples and how it aligns with the CCRS
6
Technical paper and resources
Throughout the process using the Susan Pimentel’s College and Career Readiness Standards as a base, we created our technical paper Simplified version How to use CCRS and incorporate it into your lessons Giving flexibility to the classroom instructor
