They help us make decisions.

3 Why are VALUES important?
They help us make decisions! They help us decide- Right vs. Wrong Good vs. Bad Moral vs. Immoral Important vs. Unimportant

4 How do we develop our VALUES?
From our environment: Parents & family Peers & friends Society, culture, religion Media - TV, radio, music, books, movies, role models, etc.. Personal Experiences Government, police, laws and sometimes even your Teachers!

5 Having honesty and truthfulness.
What is INTEGRITY? Having honesty and truthfulness. Doing what is right when no one is looking.

6 Trouble Rules A set of questions you ask yourself when making a difficult decision to avoid getting into trouble!

7 Trouble Rules Healthful: Does this choice present any health risks?
Ethical: Does this choice go against what you value? Legal: Does this option violate any laws? Parent Approval: Would your parents not approve of this choice? (If you say yes to any of these questions, you should not do the activity!)

8 THE DECISION MAKING MODEL
What is the PROBLEM? BRAINSTORM: List options (list at least 3 options) List the Pros – (benefits) (list at least 3 benefits) List the Cons – (consequences) (list at least 3 consequences) DECIDE

9 EXAMPLE THE PROBLEM: my friend is being abused
OPTIONS: I could tell her mom 2. take her to the school counselor 3. tell my parents THE PROS: 1. She will get help 2. She will be thankful that you care 3. She won’t be hurt any more. THE CONS: 1. she will get mad at you 2. she will not trust you anymore 3. you could lose her friendship DECIDE: I decide to take her to the counselor

10 Scenario You are at a party and your friend who drove you continues to drink throughout the night. It is now 1:30 a.m. and you are tired and want to go home. Most of your friends have already left the party. Your friend who has been drinking all night offers you a ride home. You are unsure about his sobriety at this point. He seems really drunk. You can smell the alcohol on his breath and he is slurring his words. You don’t have a driver’s license. The party is getting wilder and it doesn’t seem like you will be able to safely “crash” there. What do you decide to do?
