HNA Lesson 34 New York City Police Department The NYPD was founded in It replaced the New York City Watch who policed the city from 1700s It has undergone numerous name changes.

New York Municipal Police Force 1845-1857
The Star - This was the first badge of the New York City Police Department. It was made of copper. Officers wore it between 1845 and The star was worn over the left side of the policeman's coat and was his only badge of office, since he wore no uniform.

New York Metropolitan Police Force 1857-1872
This was a white metal shield, adopted by the Metropolitan Police District has no distinct identification representing the city.

New York Municipal Police Department 1873-1888
Municipal Police ( ). These white metal shields with copper numbers were very unpopular and were recalled in 1875. Municipal Police ( ). A white metal design adopted to replace the previous "acorn" badge.

New York Police Department 1888-1898
The commonly called Potsey due to its resembling a folded tin can that the city children would use as a tossing implement in a popular sidewalk game of the same name. This was the first shield of the Police Department of the City of New York after it's consolidation in 1898.

New York City Police Department 1898- Present
The modern shield is made of nickel silver. It is first die-struck in a drop hammer which gives it impression and then is pounded until the desired height of the characters is reached. The perimeter is then blanked and embossed and the numbers and lugs are hard soldered. The badge is then dipped, cleaned, nickel-plated and polished to a high gloss.

Although the NYPD is the main police agency in New York City, dozens of policing agencies are active in the city; including Federal agencies, the Port Authority Police, Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Police, MTA Police, and the NYC Sheriff’s Department
