Catalog Year Policy 1st Presentation to AGC January 14, 2014
2
Reason for the Policy…. To clarify for GRCC students what program requirements will be used for their graduation audit, to allow students to align their course selections to these program requirements as identified in the Catalog.
3
Current Policy (from 1991)…..
8.5 Student’s Right to Continue Under the Catalog Requirements Under Which he/ she Entered A candidate for graduation who has maintained continuous enrollment may follow, insofar as possible, the requirements listed for the desired degree in the Grand Rapids Community College catalog in effect the year he/she entered the College. Any deviation from the policy must be approved in writing by the appropriate Dean or his/her designee.
4
Issue… Curriculum Operations Support Team (COST) identified the issues: Current policy is from 1991 which hasn’t been updated Current practice is not in line with policy With all of our curriculum work, the policy is not in the student’s nor college’s best interest Current policy does not support Academic Standing Policy 8.17 that was passed in October 2013
5
Proposed Policy Statement…..
Grand Rapids Community College (GRCC) students are required to fulfill the graduation and program requirements of the Catalog in effect at the time they declare their program as a degree-seeking student. If students change their program, they must fulfill the graduation and program requirements of the Catalog in effect at the time the student requested the change. Students have the option to fulfill the graduation and program requirements of the current Catalog in effect when they apply to graduate instead of being governed by the above two guidelines—if wishing to do so, students must indicate this on their application for graduation.
6
Key Components… (default) Students will utilize the catalog from the year they declared their program including any program changes Students can elect to utilize the current catalog at time of graduation Students have an option to appeal for extenuating circumstances They must follow the Readmit Policy
