3(5) = 15 3(2x) = 6x When we write a number in front of a bracket, the missing operator is multiplication. Here we are saying 3 times 5, or 3 lots of 5. The middle one is saying 3 lots of 2x, or we can think of it as 2x, 3 times, or 2x + 2x + 2x. What does the 3rd bracket mean? Read it to me. 3(2 + x2) = ?
2
2(x + 1) = ? 5(2x + 3) = ? 4(2x2 + 4) = ?
3
2(x - 1) = ? 5(-2x - 3) = ? We can think of this subtraction of 1, as the same as So we have 2 lots of x and 2 lots of -1. Which is 2x + -2, or 2x -2.
4
-(5) = -5 -(-5) = ? The negative of an expression means everything gets inverted -(-3x) = ?
5
-(x + 1) = ? -(3 - 2x) = ? The negative of an expression means everything gets inverted -(-x - 4) = ?
