4 Great Society Johnson’s idea to reform American society both socially and economically Called for a “war on poverty” and an end to racial injustice By end of his presidency, Congress had passed 206 of his measures including the creation of Medicare (for those 65 and older) and Medicaid (for the poor) and federal housing for the poor

5 1964 Election LBJ ran against AZ Republican Barry Goldwater
Goldwater believed that federal gov’t had no business trying to rt social and economic wrongs such as poverty and discrimination; also suggested using nuclear weapons against Cuba and Vietnam LBJ won in a landslide w/ 61% of the popular vote and 90% of the electoral vote

Banned prayer in public school Limited the power of communities to censor books and films Extended free speech to include symbolic speech- wearing political buttons, burning American flag, etc Ruled all suspects must be “read” their rights before questioning in the case Miranda vs. Arizona became known as “Miranda Rights”

7 Vietnam War Communists took over North Vietnam in 1950s
By 1963 about 16,000 US forces were in South Vietnam trying to keep the Communists out In 1964 N Vietnamese (Vietcong) attacked an American Navy destroyer in the Gulf of Tonkin Congress passed the Tonkin Gulf Resolution which was not a declaration of war but granted LBJ broad military powers in Vietnam

8 The Vietcong The North Vietnamese known as the Vietcong used “hit and run” and ambush tactics and had good knowledge of the jungle terrain to their advantage Used booby traps and land mines and a network of elaborate tunnels that allowed the Vietcong to launch surprise attacks US underestimated the Vietcong’s ingenuity and resolve American morale dropped steadily throughout the war

9 The War at Home The Vietnam War was the first “living room war”- combat footage was shown nightly on network news Most of those who fought were drafted Many protests throughout the US, especially on college campuses War divided nation While many Americans were not happy with the US role in Vietnam, most were shocked to see protesters publicly criticize a war when Americans were fighting and dying in it A 1967 poll showed 70% of Americans believed war protests were acts of disloyalty

10 1968 Election By Feb % of Americans disapproved of Johnson’s handling of the war On March 31st LBJ announced he would not seek negotiations to end the war and then shocked the nation by announcing he would not run for reelection Race for the Democratic nomination became fierce

11 Death of Martin Luther King
Martin Luther King, Jr. had been the leader of the Civil Rights Movement throughout the 1960s On April 4th, 1968 he stepped out onto the balcony of his hotel room in Memphis, TN and was shot and killed James Earl Ray was convicted of killing MLK Rage over MLK’s death led to the worst urban riots in US history

12 Robert F. Kennedy RFK, brother of JFK, had become the leading candidate in the Democratic primary On June 4th, 1968 RFK won the California primary making it very likely that he would win the Democratic nomination for president After giving a victory speech at a Los Angeles hotel, he was leaving through the kitchen when he was shot and killed by a young Palestinian immigrant named Sirhan Sirhan who was angry about Kennedy’s support for Israel

13 1968 Election 1968 Democratic Primary ended up b/w Eugene McCarthy and Hubert Humphrey McCarthy was very popular with the antiwar crowd Democratic Convention was held in Chicago and more than 10,000 antiwar protesters showed up and chaos ensued-Humphrey was nominated Republicans nominated Richard Nixon who ended up winning by more than 100 electoral votes even though he only won 43% of the popular vote
