14 MATHEMATICS A student earning a BA or BFA degree must complete 3 credits of MTH higher than MTH 101 or MTH 107 before graduating. A student earning a BS degree must complete MTH 161/162 or MTH 140/141 & MTH 162 or MTH 171/172 and either a computer science (CSC) course or PSY 292, or a math statistics course.

15 ENGLISH COMPOSITION ENG 103: ACT English score below 18 and SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing or Critical Reading score below 430 and TOEFL iBT Writing score below 18. The students need to have an IELTS score of 5.5 or above in order to be placed in ENG 105 (that's the equivalent to the required TOEFL iBT of 18 or above for placement). ENG 105: ACT English score or SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing or Critical Reading score or TOEFL iBT Writing score 18 or above. ENG 106 or 107: ACT English score 32 or above or SAT Evidence-Based Reading and Writing or Critical Reading score 700 or above.

16 MODERN LANGUAGES Students will be assessed on their placement during the 1st week of classes. No placement test, except an online Spanish assessment at this time. A student must pass a 200 level competency in a language to graduate.

17 ENGLISH COMPOSITION A student should NOT be enrolled in ENG 105 if they have received AP, IB or Dual Enrollment credits, or been waived due to an ACT score of 32 (ENG) or a SAT score of 700 (CRITICAL READING & WRITING).

21 If UM has not received the AP/IB scores for a course, tell the student to call either AP at or IB at for an official notification from AP or IB to be sent to UM (#5815) . Admissions MUST have these scores by end of this semester.

22 COGNATES

23 COGNATES Every student (except Foote Fellows) must complete 3 cognates, one in A&H, one in P&S, one in STEM. Every major and minor fulfills one cognate requirement See … Designed cognates are found using the search engine See … Students may do more cognates, which get listed on their transcript.

24 COGNATE VARIANTS Courses that transfer in with specific UM course credit can be used for cognates. Students may ask the RAU to use non-specific transfer credits Students may ask the RAU to substitute courses in a cognate Only Transfer students with 30+ credits can do one “individualized cognate” (IC), which allows flexible use of transfer credits. Must be approved by the student’s college/school advising office.
