1 MT:4 The 1920’s Learning Target #1: What was the 19th amendment? How did the 19th amendment change the role of women in society Assignment: View power point then answer the questions at the end. Add questions to handout #1

2 Who could vote? For a long time only… White men who owned property were the only ones allowed to vote in the USA Later any white male born in the USA After the civil war in 1884, African American males could vote

3 Women could not vote Beliefs for why women shouldn’t vote: How not voting effected women? People thought women too dumb to understand politics If women voted they would stop getting married, they would stop having children and the human race would die out Women were too emotional to handle voting Women had little rights Women could not own property Only “bad” women worked, women couldn’t work Women couldn’t get a divorce and if they divorced they could not get custody of the children

4 Suffrage Movement-Fight for voting
Women began to fight for the right to vote Marches, protests, wrote letters It was a very long process- Took years Wyoming was the 1st state to let women vote

6 19th amendment June 4, 1919 Women given the right to vote
The 19th Amendment was added to the US Constitution “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.”

7 Results of suffrage for women
Women could now vote on issues Laws were passed because women began to vote Birth control Divorce laws Property laws Women’s confidence grows Women began to get jobs Since women had their own money, companies began inventing products geared towards women

8 Inventions – easier, more leisure time
Iron Washer machine

9 Extra time gave women time to find jobs = make more money = buy more stuff
Women became leading consumers (spenders of money) after the 19th amendment

10 Flapper Women began to cut their hair in bobs Women wore short dresses
Women danced, drank, smoked, cussed Rebelled from traditional way women were expected to dress and behave Flappers were seen as loose women (hoochies)

11 Questions Who or what type of people were allowed to vote prior to women? What ideas/ theories for why women should not vote? How did the lack of being able to vote effect women? What did women do to gain support for the passage of a law that allowed women to vote? When were women finally allowed to vote? Which amendment gave when the right to vote? How did the lives of women change after they could vote?
