8 Open source also means that your future is open.
Open standards are necessary to create a good environment for participation. And open standards lead to interoperability and eliminate vendor lock-in. Open standards protect you from dead-end solutions. That's why we feel it is so important for us to work directly with the open source community and other technology vendors—both open source and proprietary—to make sure our technology is interoperable. This is what our customers ask for and expect.

9 Interoperability - The Broken Way
The vendor defines the level playing field Direct Interoperability NDA, IPR 1:1 deals, no openness Closed market No verification possible by third party

10 The Better Way The Standard defines the level playing field Open market 1:n relation Implementations can be verified by third parties

11 Open Standard - Definition
Simple checklist Anyone can join Anyone can get it Anyone can implement Anyone can use At least 2 implementations Verification ... for free, with no restrictions

17 This isn't a new idea. This is actually a very old idea.
It's one of the major differences in our model and how we work. And it's what open source is all about. We create the kinds of relationships that are only possible when the technology is truly open and it's delivered through a customer-friendly model that puts control back in the customer's hands. We understand it's not always practical for our customers to participate directly in open source development. We work with the open source community so you don't have to. Red Hat's success is all about building trust. We've established credibility in open source communities by contributing, participating, guiding, and in some cases, leading development. We've established trust with our enterprise customers by hardening, testing, certifying, fixing and supporting the open source technology they need. We all know we can do more by working together.

18 Working together is exactly what we do with the New York Stock Exchange. This is one of the ways they describe the value Red Hat brings to them. New York Stock Exchange is one of the world's most demanding computing environments. They choose to work with Red Hat. Not just as a technology provider, but as a partner and trusted guide. NYSE Euronext - operates the world’s leading and most liquid exchange group. It standardized on Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Red Hat Network to maintain the reliability, high performance and security of its mission-critical financial trading platform. With Red Hat solutions, NYSE Euronext has realized greater flexibility, freedom from vendor lock-in, cost savings and the ability to handle heavy workloads while producing rapid performance results.

19 And we can help solve these problems for our customers by taking advantage of a full range of technology and services. Spanning infrastructure, middleware, management, consulting, training and support.

20 The Red Hat open source solution stack delivers a wide range of viable alternatives to proprietary technologies. We deliver value through every application, every workload, and with every business requirement.

21 Red Hat bridges the gap. We COMBINE the rapid innovation of open source development and the power of the community--together with the trustworthy, stable value of global enterprise expertise from the world's leading open source provider. Red Hat is a bridge to the open source community for our enterprise customers. We help them take full advantage of the cost savings, reliable, secure technology, and the value that only Red Hat delivers through the unique advantages of the open source model. Red Hat has the expertise and the leadership to make an open source strategy pay off. If you have a Red Hat subscription, you have 3,000 people (some are among the world's leading open source experts, and leading contributors to major open source projects) working for you, ready to support you and solve problems if they arise. You can't get this with open source technology alone. And if your open source strategy relies on a “free” distribution, you're on your own.

22 The subscription model is the best way for us to deliver the on-going value of Red Hat, and the continuous innovation of open source to our customers. The subscription is at the heart of our customer-friendly business model. Ultimately, the subscription model delivers peace of mind over the long- term. Predictable technology, predictable costs, predictable innovation, continuous value. Primary features of a Red Hat subscription include: - Access to the software product binaries and documentation (source code is available for free with or without a subscription) - Regular product updates and version upgrades - Maintenance (bug fixes, security fixes, new hardware support and features) - Support (phone and/or web, up to 24x7 with - 1 hour response) - Ability to deploy on fully supported hardware and software from a large portfolio of certified ISV applications and OEM hardware certifications - Ability to work with Red Hat to influence future product directions - Stable application interfaces (API/ABI) for multiple years (up to 7) so long-term, secure, deployments are feasible A subscription is more than just the technology. More than just support. Only when these elements are combined do you have the full value of a Red Hat subscription.

23 Almost investment grade ...

24 Why Red Hat? We work closely with the community. We lead several key projects within the community and participate in many others. We harden the technology, we test, we QA. We work with more than 2,000 ISVs to certify our solutions. We have more than 3,000 certified applications. We are open source support experts. We are the trusted guide to open source.
