October 26-27, 2017 Objectives: Analyze literary fiction.
Compose an AP-style essay. Catalyst: Finish Native Son close read Homework & Reminders: Perrine’s: “The Lottery” (read/outline/ answer 5, 6, 8) Native Son assessment 11/8-11/9 (annotated novel, composition book, and MWDS due)
2
Native Son close read (POV)
Close read the following passage, highlighting/ annotating specific syntactical choices and rhetorical devices. On the opposite side of your composition book, analyze the impact of these decisions. How does perspective (p.o.v.) impact the text?
3
Composition Notes Splice = comma splice. You CANNOT separate two independent clauses with a comma. FIX THIS. “awk”: awkward phrasing; try revising for clarity [zombies] or Z = you used passive voice to hide. Don’t do that. You’re better than that. VERBS = you need to write using active voice and present tense UNICORN = you killed a unicorn. You monster.
4
Composition Notes Other issues:
Say “the excerpt…” instead of including the whole novel (you didn’t read the whole novel) Using a lot of words to say what should be said in not a lot of words Too many questions (stop asking your audience/reader to do more work) Transitions are important Try avoiding listy thesis statements Topic sentences need to be claims about the text (sub-thesis points) Include the devices the prompt asks for in your body paragraphs as support of your claim
5
Timed Writing Remember all the notes I just gave you?
Prove you were listening. You have 50 minutes to read/annotate the text and compose a super amazing essay that answers all parts of the prompt. Effectively.
