China’s First Emperor Shi Huangdi was China’s first emperor.
He was the ruler of the Qin people. Prior to his rule, China was divided into 7 kingdoms. These kingdoms were often at war with one another.

China’s First Emperor Qin is also known as Chin, which is where the name China comes from. Lived near the Western border, but extended his rule over much of what is now China.

China’s First Emperor Shi Huangdi provided strong and harsh rule.
He sought to protect the people by building a wall on the border. This became known as the Great Wall of China.

China’s First Emperor Shi Huangdi also created a terra-cotta army of 6,000 life-size warriors and horses for the afterlife.

Great Wall of China Portions were built by other rulers.
Shi connected them and added to them. After his death, other emperors repaired and added to it. Exact measurement is hard to measure, but roughly 4500 miles long.

China’s First Emperor Shi Huangdi built roads in China, which allowed his armies to get to places rapidly and put down rebellions. Divided China into Districts that were ruled by his trusted officials.

China’s First Emperor Developed a common currency
Allowed for regions to trade. Outlawed the teachings of Confucius. Upon his death, the Dynasty lasted only 15 more years.

Han Dynasty Liu Bang became the next emperor.
Created a stable government, but one that was less harsh. Han Dynasty lasted about 400 years.

Han Dynasty In 140 BC, Liu Bang’s great-grandson Wudi, rose to power at the age of 15. Wudi repaired the Great Wall. Strengthened the army and increased the size of China.

Han Dynasty After Wudi’s death, several very young emperors tried to rule, without success. One was only 100 days old. Warlords gained power and the kingdom was split into many smaller kingdoms.
