3 My Position: I am an Intern in the Psychology Industrial Internship
Program. I am working in Connie Varnhagen’s Instructional Technologies Lab. The lab is meant to be a resource tool for the department as it offers both supplies and technical expertise for the improvement of instructional quality.

4 The Instructional Technologies Assistants:
- We are the resource centre for instructional technology materials. - We provide staff with a trained resource person to help with any instructional technology needs. - We offer support in developing and evaluating instructional technology. We can personally collaborate with any staff member interested in the technological resources mentioned in this presentation. * *

19 Psychology Instructional Computer Lab:
The psychology instructional computer lab is located in P-116 and is available for use by staff and students in the department of psychology. Lab computers consist of 15 - PIII- 450 Pentium type computers with 128 MB of memory, 17 inch color monitors, and 10 G disk drives running the Windows NT operating systems.

20 Psychology Instructional Computer Lab:
Each computer is multimedia capable and includes a 100 MB Zip drive, a CD-ROM drive with audio speakers, and one printer is provided for the facility. All computers are networked to a local file server and to the campus network.

21 Psychology Instructional Computer Lab:
Current Software Holdings for the Lab - virus protection and network utilities - network browsers (Netscape and Internet Explorer) - the Microsoft Office Suite (Access, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher and Word)

22 Psychology Instructional Computer Lab:
- SAS version 7 and SPSS version 10 (for statistical analysis) - Specialized software or data set installation for instructional needs may be requested through Harold Tischer in the psychology shop.

23 Psychology Instructional Computer Lab:
Access to computers is by ID and password where the ID is the room number containing the computer and the password for each machine is “hello”. Special accounts may be setup by request to Harold Tischer.

24 Psychology Instructional Computer Lab:
The lab is open for use from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm Monday through Friday and by combination lock access at all other times. Users who wish to gain access to the Lab after open hours may contact Bev Bochon in P to receive the combination.

31 Requesting the course page templates:
1. Get a hold of me (Rachel Hirsch). - phone: - - drop in: BS P-441 2. Request how you would like to receive the templates. - disk - file transfer/FTP 3. It is suggested that the templates folder be placed on your desktop (windows -> desktop).

32 Edit main course page: Open the templates folder in Netscape Composer.

33 Edit main course page: Once the main course page template is open there are several adjustments that can be made so that it is personalised. The following suggestions are the most generic ways in which the page can be personalised, other methods may work better for the individual. Note: other editors can also be used

35 Edit main course page: Let’s see how exactly these changes can be made: - main course page Clicking the publish icon at any time will allow you to ensure that your page looks how you want it to.

37 Edit main course page: Once all changes have been made to the main course page you will want to save your work. Just as with any other program look under ‘File’ for ‘Save As’ and choose your new page name.

41 FTP templates folder to your account:
You should have the following icon on your desktop. The FTP account allows you to publish pages on the Internet.

42 FTP templates folder to your account:
Click on the FTP icon to open it up. To log in: - profile name is ice.psych.ualberta.ca - host name/address - user ID personal ID (ask Fred) - Password personal password (ask Fred)

When you are logged on you will have your account information on the right and the contents of your computer on the left.

Find your templates folder on desktop in the left window (local system). Click the green arrow to get to the first screen. - windows - desktop - templates

45 FTP templates folder to your account:
Find the folder in your account where you want to publish your course page. Often you will want to use a “public_html” folder. You might want to create this folder if you do not already have it.

Now all you have to do is transfer the updated folder from your desktop to your account.

47 Fred Boyko: Once you have completed all the previous steps all you need to do is let Fred Boyko know your course page address so that it can be added to the Psychology Department page. Fred at using your course page address as the subject line. You can now create the basic course page. Congratulations!

48 Posting Lecture Notes:
Lecture notes can be easily posted on the schedule page by saving each notes section in Microsoft Word as an HTML document. The icons for lecture notes on the schedule_temp.html page are each labelled using the following format: notes(x).html. Thus, you will want to likewise label your notes in Word according to the order you would like it posted. Once you save the notes in HTML format just FTP them to your templates folder in your account. Done!

49 Posting Student’s Marks:
To post student marks all you have to do is send an to 1. The subject will be your course ID (ex. p223A1). 2. The body of the is exactly what you want the students to see posted. You will likely have to cut and paste the list of marks from your computer to the body of the message. DO NOT use attachments!
