1 Subject-Verb Agreement – General Information

2 The SUBJECT of a sentence or clause is the noun or pronoun that answers the question WHO? or WHAT? before the verb. Example: The cat chased the balloon. (The verb is CHASED) WHO or WHAT chased? The cat If the subject of a sentence is singular, the verb must also be singular. If the subject of a sentence is plural, the verb must also be plural.

3 The fire flickers in the soft breeze
The fire flickers in the soft breeze. (The singular verb flickers agrees with the singular subject fire.) Tina has a role in the play. (The singular verb has agrees with the singular subject Tina.) Fireflies glow at night. (The plural verb glow agrees with the plural subject fireflies.) The bricks make a sturdy path. (The plural verb make agrees with the plural subject bricks.)

NOTE: The singular pronouns I and you take plural verbs. Example: I start with the baton, and you begin with the flag.
