STEAM Georgia School Certification Program

Why add STEAM? “With global competition rising, America is at a critical juncture in defining its economic future…. Art and design are poised to transform our economy in the 21st century in the same way that science and technology did in the last century, and the STEAM movement is an opportunity for America to sustain its role as innovator of the world.” John Maedea, “STEM to STEAM: Art in K-12 Is Key to Building a Strong Economy,” Edutopia, October 2, 2012. 4/9/2019

Strategic Plan Goal Schools at the elementary, middle and high school level will have the opportunity to increase arts integrated learning through the certification process in the school year. The STEAM program mirrors the existing STEM program in all aspects. Certification rubrics at each grade level are complete and the 30 day review period had overwhelmingly positive comments. Edits were made for clarification based on those comments and the program is ready for schools to begin in 2016/17. 4/9/2019

Objectives The creative industries are a 29 billion dollar sector in Georgia’s economy employing more than 200,000 artists, actors, dancers, musicians and arts administrators. The goal of this seal is to create students who are prepared for college and careers in these fine arts related industries. It is a signal to employers and higher education institutions that a student is prepared to participate in Georgia’s robust Creative Industries sector. 4/9/2019
