Welcome Background Vacancy Process Timeline T’s & C’s The Marine Management Organisation (MMO) is an executive non-departmental public body of the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs. We license and regulate marine activities in the seas around England and Wales so that they're carried out in a sustainable way. We’re responsible for: Managing and monitoring fishing fleet sizes and quotas for catches. Ensuring compliance with fisheries regulations, such as fishing vessel licences and quotas for fish and seafood. Managing funding programmes for fisheries activities. Planning and licensing for marine construction, deposits and dredging that may have an environmental, economic or social impact. Making marine nature conservation byelaws. Dealing with marine pollution emergencies, including oil spills. Helping to prevent illegal, unregulated and unreported fishing worldwide. Producing marine plans to include all marine activities, including those we don’t directly regulate. Welcome Background Vacancy Process Timeline T’s & C’s ABOUT THE WORK AREA Fisheries Management Team The Fisheries Management Team helps deliver the fisheries policies of Defra to ensure the sustainable management of fish stocks. What do we do? Work in partnership with the fishing industry to manage fishing quotas worth hundreds of millions of pounds each year Swap quotas between UK fishing companies and other countries so the quota gets to those who are catching the fish Give guidance to the fishing industry to help them comply with rules Carry out the licensing of sea fishing vessels Regulate and support the work of fish producer organisations who have roles including marketing and manging quotas on behalf of the fishermen who are members Why do we do it? We are passionate about providing a great service to those working hard to make their living by fishing and providing healthy British produce. We care about the marine environment and are proud that most UK fish stocks are getting healthier every year. Key achievements Helping English inshore fishermen to earn over £12 million from fish quotas in 2017. Playing a part in EU fish stocks recovering from overfishing to the majority being sustainable. Working closely with the fishing industry and Cefas to improve the understanding of fish stocks so that 61% are now based on the highest level of knowledge Candidate Information Pack

Process Timeline T’s & C’s CASE STUDY Key Facts We deliver over 200 fishing licence transactions per year to help the fishing industry buy and sell vessels We promote the maximum use of the UK’s fishing quota and effort allocations to achieve economic growth In 2017 we secured over £2 million pound of extra fishing quotas for the UK by trading quota we didn’t need for those we could use in 2018 We implemented new controls to protect the sea bass stock in 2018 to ensure it is able to recover for the long-term benefit of commercial and recreational fishers We gave over 1000 individual pieces of advice to the fishing industry and members of the public about marine fisheries in 2017 We helped the UK fishing industry to increase income from £775 million in 2015 to £936 million in 2016. We launched new guidance for Fish Producer Organisations in 2017 Our monthly consultations with inshore fishers about catch limits has moved online to give greater transparency We avoided any fishery closures in 2016 and 2017 by closely monitoring uptake to ensure fishing can take place during the whole year. Nature of the Role The work is varied and so each day will require working on different tasks to maintain progress on longer term initiatives, as well as responding to queries from the fishing industry and colleagues. As one of ten members of the MMO’s Fisheries Management Team, you will work in a supportive environment of passionate professionals with great opportunities to develop your career. Welcome Background Vacancy Process Timeline T’s & C’s Security Clearance: Conflicts of interest: Pre-employment checks will be undertaken in accordance with the HM Government Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS). The BPSS comprises verification of four main elements: Identity employment history for the last three years nationality and immigration status, including the right to work criminal records check for unspent convictions also known as a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) checks. In some circumstances enhanced checks may also be required however candidates will be advised if this is the case. Additionally, successful candidates are required to give a reasonable account of any significant periods (six months or more in the past three years) of time spent abroad. The DBS checks are designed to provide clarity on any unspent convictions and therefore the provisions of the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (1974) apply. Candidates must note the requirement to declare any interests they may have that might cause questions to be raised about their approach to the business of the Department.
