FERMENTATION Demonstration: Directions & Pictures
2
Fermentation Demonstration
Gatorade bottles with valve caps were cleaned Substrates to be tested were placed in separate bottles Balloons were stretched over valves of each cap Hot water (approx. 110 degrees F) poured into each bottle, filling ¾ of bottle One packet of dry activated yeast added to each bottle, simultaneously
3
Fermentation Demonstration (cont’d.)
Caps, with valves closed, placed on bottles Each bottle agitated to mix substrate, yeast, & water Valve opened to allow evolving gas to enter balloon Bottles allowed to ferment for 1 hour Results of carbon dioxide gas production shown in the following slides. (“+s” represent degree of gas production) Water (as control)—no fermentation (0) Sugar (6 sugar cubes, approx. 2 tablespoonsful)—greatest fermentation (++++) Sunny D citrus drink (4 tbls)—good fermentation (+++)

Fermentation Demonstration (cont’d.)
Results (cont’d.) Grape juice (4 tbls)—good fermentation (+++) Vault energy drink—good fermentation, but slower than earlier bottles (+++) Gatorade—good fermentation, but slower than earlier bottles (+++)
