“A Death in the Woods” by Sherwood Anderson
Before we begin reading, let’s quickly recap what we learned yesterday: What do you remember about Realism? Background Info: Anderson based “A Death in the Woods” on a childhood experience where he found the body of an old, apparently homeless woman in the forest. He felt so strongly for this woman, who died alone and who apparently had no one to remember her, that he wrote “A Death in the Woods” to honor her memory. As we read, pay close attention to moments when the narrator describes the old woman. Consider: What is unusual about the woman? About the narrator?

“A Death in the Woods” by Sherwood Anderson
Instead of our normal individual questions today, we’re going to try out a Socratic Seminar. First, choose FIVE of the six questions to respond to. Be sure to back up your responses with textual evidence. Once most people are finished, we’ll start the discussion. Make sure you speak up at least once and back up your response with evidence for full credit.
