What do you know about apprenticeships? Do you know anybody who is doing one?

Apprenticeships Apprenticeships are increasingly seen as a way into to some of the highest-level jobs. Jamie Oliver started as an apprentice, footballers start as apprentices, but also people coming through the Apprenticeship route take some high performing roles in industry, business, retail etc. These slides will help you to: 1. Understand the key elements of an Apprenticeship. 2. Consider the scope of careers which can start with an Apprenticeship.

What is an Apprenticeship?
It is a job with training. Being an apprentice means that you have a job that includes gaining recognised qualifications and essential skills whilst you are working and earning a wage. There are three types of Apprenticeships: Foundation Apprenticeship Apprenticeship Higher Apprenticeship There are three different types because different jobs need different levels of qualifications, some higher than others. When you look at the vacancies you will see the different levels and what they include.

Why Apprenticeships might be a good option
So, Apprenticeships combine practical training in a job with study. As an apprentice you will: Work alongside experienced staff Gain job-specific skills Earn a wage and get holiday pay Get time for study related to your role (usually one day a week) Apprenticeships take 1 to 5 years to complete depending on their level.

You can apply for an apprenticeship while you’re still at school. To start one, you’ll need to be: 16 or over by the end of the summer holidays Living in England Not in full-time education

How to apply for an Apprenticeship
Apprenticeships have equivalent educational levels. Some apprenticeships may also give you an additional qualification, such as a diploma. Search for an apprenticeship Sign in or create an account Complete and submit your application The National Careers Service has advice on writing applications and what to do at interviews.

If you need more experience to apply for an Apprenticeship
If you feel you’re not ready for an apprenticeship, a traineeship is a course designed to prepare you for one. What is a traineeship? A traineeship is a course with work experience that gets you ready for work or an apprenticeship. It can last up to 6 months. You can apply if you’re: Eligible to work in England Unemployed and have little or no work experience Aged 16 to 24 and qualified below Level 3

In summary So, the advantages in doing an apprenticeship are:
You will have a mix between work with an employer and training You will be earning while learning at college You will have a mix of vocational and job-specific technical qualifications You can progress to higher levels (including university).
