2 LEGISLATIVE LEADER Recommends new laws to Congress
State of the Union Address Usually in late January States programs and policies the president wants in place or not in place Gives Congress an idea of the budget

3 COMMANDER IN CHIEF Head of all U.S. armed forces Deploying troops
Only Congress can declare war Can send troops if he feels the interest of the U.S. is being threatened War Powers Resolution (1973) President must recall troops within 60 days, unless Congress approves

4 FOREIGN POLICY LEADER Heads the U.S. involvement with other countries
Appoints diplomats to represent the U.S. government in foreign countries (Ambassadors) DIPLOMACY- art of interacting with foreign countries TREATIES- written agreements with other countries. Senate must approve the treaty by 2/3’s vote

5 APPOINT SUPREME COURT JUSTICES AND FEDERAL JUDGES
Senate must approve by 2/3rds vote

6 GRANT REPRIEVES AND PARDONS
REPRIEVE- postpones the carrying out of someone’s sentence PARDON- forgives a person for his or her crime. It eliminates the punishment. COMMUTATION- reducing a person’s sentence
