1 Do Now Activity Name the 4 cerebral lobes and their functions (all except insular). List the 4 major parts of the brain. What are the 3 parts of the brain stem? What are the 3 parts of the diencephalon? Identify the parts of the brain based off the figure on the right: Yellow part = ? Peach part = ? Dark blue part = ? Green part = ?

2 chapter 12-2: Parts of the nervous system
Essential Question: Identify 2 parts of the Nervous System whose function is to protect the Central Nervous System. chapter 12-2: Parts of the nervous system Learning Targets Identify structure and function of 3 types of muscle tissue. Identify the functional characteristics of muscle tissue. List the functions of muscle Describe the anatomy of skeletal muscle

4 The Limbic System This is a functional brain system
It has structures located in the cerebrum, thalamus and hypothalamus It is also known as The Emotional Brain Integrates and responds to wide variety of stimuli that trigger emotions and feelings Also involved in long term memory processing

6 Meninges There are 3 types of meninges (connective tissue) that surrounds the CNS The function of meninges is to: Cover and protect CNS Protect blood vessels Contains fluid- (cerebrospinal fluid) Partitions the skull

7 Meninges The 3 types of meninges are: Dura Mater: outer most, leathery
Arachnoid Mater: middle meninges, forms loose brain covering Pia Mater: inner most, made of delicate tissue and is highly vascularized

9 Cerebrospinal Fluid Cerebrospinal Fluid is found in and around the CNS
The function of cerebrospinal fluid is to: Reduces brain weight Cushions CNS Protects CNS from trauma Helps nourish the brain

11 Epidural Space The epidural space is the space between the spinal cord and vertebrae It is filled with fat and veins It is also filled with cerebrospinal fluid

13 White and Gray Matter White Matter Gray Matter
Nerve fibers with myelin covers Forms white colored structure of the brain and spinal cord In brain they form fibers that allow for communication between brain parts Gray Matter Cell bodies and nerve fibers without myelin
