3 General Library Information
Library Hours The library is open from 7:15A.M. to 5:30P.M. on Monday through Thursday. On Fridays, the library closes ½ hour after the end of school. The library is closed on all school designated holidays.

4 Purpose of the Library:
TO HELP STUDENTS DEVELOP AN UNDERSTANDING OF HOW TO ACCESS AND USE INFORMATION FOR EDUCATIONAL LEARNING NEEDS.

5 A Few Rules 1. Speak quietly.
2. Use computers for educational purposes. 3. Print up to 7 copies in black ink and 1 copy in colored ink. 4. No food, drink, or electronic devices inside the library. 5. Permission slips needed during class time. 6. Take good care of library materials. 7. Recycle trash.

6 CNHS Library Visit Policies and Procedures
Students must present a signed pass from their teacher in order to enter the library during class time. Students must sign into library log indicating date and time of visit.

7 Book Checkout 1. Bring books to circulation desk for checkout.
2. Return books at circulation desk to the librarian by due date to avoid fines. 3. Please do not return books to circulation desk and leave them unattended.

8 Library Materials Checkout
Students may checkout two items at a time. Materials are available for checkout for three weeks at a time. Materials can be renewed if no one else has requested them. Fines will be assessed for return of late or lost items.

9 Library Materials Checkout
Students will be charged the replacement cost of the item in the case of lost or damaged materials. Students will not receive their report cards or be notified of their grades until all library fines are cleared by the deadline. In addition, a detention will be issued.

10 Student Access Computer Terminals
The Library is organized by Dewey Decimal System which shows location of library materials on the shelves in the library.

13 Library Layout All fiction and nonfiction print materials are shelved along the walls of the main library room. All library computers print out materials are available for pickup at the Librarian’s front desk.

16 About the Front Desk Additional work tools such as staplers, pencil sharpener, hole punch, paperclips, scotch tape, paper, pens and pencils, colored markers, etc. are available for your use at the front desk. The area behind the front desk including the equipment room is off limits to students unless special permission to use this area has been granted.

FICTION – BOOKS THAT ARE NOT TRUE FICTION BOOKS ARE ARRANGED ALPHABETICALLY BY AUTHOR’S LAST NAME FIC+ FIRST THREE LETTERS OF AUTHOR’S LAST NAME

20 Databases Available from home or at school on a 24/7 basis.
Access through school website, cardinalnewman.org. On top horizontal toolbar, select Academics and then Library. For MLA format information. Select English for MLA citation builders and guidance.

21 DataBases eLibrary: A college level research engine that allows you to cite the original source: books, encyclopedias, etc. Encyclopedia Britannica: This encyclopedia is an excellent general reference database. SIRS Researcher: This database presets both sides of controversial issues. World Book Advanced: This is a general reference database including primary source references and ebooks. World Atlas: This website is good for country reports, history, culture, and current events.

22 SUCCESSFUL STUDENTS USE THE LIBRARY
According to the California Department of Education, “More than 60 research studies throughout the nation have shown that students attending schools with good libraries learn more, get better grades, and score higher on standardized tests than their peers in schools without libraries.” This statement was made by Jack O’Connell, State Superintendent of Public Instruction, in news release dated 9/16/2010.
