4. John Greenleaf Whittier
Part of the “Fireside Poets” – group of Romantic poets who were so popular, families would read their works aloud after dinner for entertainment (Bryant from Wednesday was one of them!)
Grew up in extreme poverty on a rural farm, had very little formal education – embraces the Romantic idea of celebrating the common man, emphasizing emotion as a form of intelligence and truth
Celebrated the simple joys of nature and the close bonds of families living in poverty – this became especially popular as more people moved into the cities and began to long for the “good old days”
