How can we utilize institutional data to support strategic initiatives – specifically retention? Organization and Challenges Utilizing Banner and making others aware of the importance of data stored in a central location Utilizing official reporting tool – Argos – to push out data in support of initiatives Examples of Data output in dynamic reports Lynne

6 Organization: Modules, Divisions and Data Reporting
Banner Modules – Student, Financial Aid, Finance, HR, etc. Divisions across campus – Enrollment Services, Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, Finance, Advancement, etc. No centralized reporting department Analysts and data report writers exist within different areas on campus Reporting methodology varies Understanding the benefit of centralized data varies Lynne

8 Strategic Initiative: Retention
New opportunity: Highlight importance of Banner data Highlight the need to understand importance of centralized data collection Using Banner data to support initiative Previous Committee (2010): come up with ideas and proposal of where the university should go moving forward Current Committee ( ): data supported, actionable items to help students succeed and persist Vic

9 Strategic Initiative: Retention
Predict retention probability for each student and store information centrally Clean data in Banner for datasets for analysis and to measure the success of initiatives Support a university-wide initiative that relies on data Able to utilize university reporting tool (Argos) to push out information to stakeholders Vic

10 Student Engagement Data analysis confirms that student engagement is significant for persistence. Prior to 2012 – Greek Life (SGRSACT) and NCAA Athletics (SGRSPRT) only Student Affairs staff member requested collection of activities data Worked with Student Module and Advancement Module Data collected each semester Vic

11 Student Engagement Staff member left – while data continued to be collected, little was done with the data Unaware of process – Student Affairs buys Presence software to track student engagement and activity Nothing wrong with software but no discussion on how data would come back to Banner Vic
