3 Get in discussion groups of 3 or 4 - Each group needs 1 Literature book.

4 ACT 1 Scene 1 DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
Refer to your Reading Log Questions for Act 1 Scene 1 – you may also want to refer to the Literature book. Discuss all questions for #1 – make sure to come up with higher level vocabulary to describe Mr. Frank. Discuss his specific words and actions in this scene. Discuss Act 1 Scene 1 #2 – setting chart – and Act 1 Scene 1 #3. Hint for #3 – we are READING the play in a book, not WATCHING the play as an audience.

5 Discuss – what is the difference between summarizing and paraphrasing?
Discuss Act 1 Scene 1 #4. Discuss Act 1 Scene 1 #5-8. Based on the reader’s or audience’s perspective, how does the flashback impact their understanding of the plot of the play? Do you as the audience/reader LIKE knowing how things will end before the “beginning”? Why or why not?

6 ACT 1 Scene 2 DISCUSSION QUESTIONS
Refer to your Reading Log Questions for Act 1. Scene 2 #1 - There is a strong contrast between Mr. Frank’s emotions in Act 1 Scene 1 and Act 1 Scene 2. Discuss this with your groups members, coming up with higher level vocabulary to describe Mr. Frank in both scenes. Why is there such a strong contrast – what has affected Mr. Frank? Why did the playwrights include this contrast for the readers? Discuss Act 1 Scene 1 #2 – contrast between the setting.

7 #3 – Define the term dramatic irony
#3 – Define the term dramatic irony. Each group member needs to give an example of dramatic irony in a television show, movie, or play they have seen (NOT anything watched or discussed in class). Discuss #4. Make sure to check the group’s answer with your teacher. At this point what are you noticing in the play that supports what you learned in your non-fiction preliminary and background work? At this point what are you noticing in the play that DIFFERS from what you learned in your non-fiction preliminary and background work? Add to your chart (reality vs. the play).

8 Discuss and add to your character charts.
- What have you learned about each character at this point? Hint: look back at the ITALICS (the narrator’s portion) for Scene 2 to get more details about the characters. - Based on what you’ve read so far, what are your thoughts about each character? - What do you notice about the relationships between the characters at this point? Be specific (talk about specific relationships between specific characters).

9 Based on what you’ve added to your character charts and discussed about the characters’ relationships, Make a prediction about what you think will happen as time passes in the Secret Annex.
