7. Be an Encourager
If your child makes a mistake or gets muddled while reading , you can follow the 3 “P’s:
PAUSE (for 3 seconds): Let your child try and solve the problem before you assist
PROMPT: by saying: Let’s try that again, think of a word that makes sense…
PRAISE your child and be positive

8. After Reading Ask your child to: Talk about what he/she read.
Answer “why” questions (Why do you think…?)
Make connections to text (What did you like? What does it remind you of?)

9. Fix-Up Strategies Look at the picture(s) Go back to other words
Skip the word and continue
Reread the word while sounding it out
Reread with the parent
