Produce transcription expressive/emotive portraits both in photography and in traditional art media.
Develop both your observational drawing and painting skills and techniques.

4. Rankin photography PURPOSE? Looking at this work by Rankin:
Why do you think he chooses to use famous people/celebrities in his photography?
What do you feel are his intentions in these particular types of portraits?
Is there a significance to the reason why they are all in black and white?
If you were to create portrait photos similar to these, what considerations would you need to take into account?

5. Task 1
Indeed, you are going to be creating some photographs of your own in the style of Rankin. To begin with, you will work together; some of you acting as models while others photograph; then take it in turns to swap roles. You can also take more photos of family/friends at home for this.
Considerations:
What background?
What pose/posture?
How much of the portrait?
Capturing mood, emotion?
Capturing character?
Any props?
What clothing?
What lighting?
Wind effects on hair?

6. Task 2 EDITING: Upload all of your photographs onto the computer.
Print a contact sheet.
Evaluate your photos and annotate your contact sheet.
Choose 4 of the best photos to edit on Photoshop.
Crop where necessary,
Change them all into grayscale (mode  grayscale),
Edit the lighting (use levels/curves),
Use additional lighting effects if necessary (filter  render  lighting effects)
Print these 4 photos out A4 size

7. Peer-assessment - critique
Rankin transcription:
Swap all 4 of your Rankin-inspired photographs with another person in the group (someone you haven’t worked with yet).
Looking at their photos,
write your details on top
of the sticker.
Now, write your feedback
for WWW (what works well)
and EBI (even better if)
Hand their work back with the sticker you have given feedback on.
STICK this feedback sticker in the back of your book.

8. Homework 1 Rankin influence page:
Having looked at some of the photos of Rankin and having responded to his work, now produce an Influence Page in your sketchbook. Include the following:
Lots of example images of his work (use the photos like the ones shown in the lesson).
Information about the artist, though NOT biographical; get info about how he works, where he gets his influence/inspiration from etc.
A piece of detailed written analysis (use the 4C model to help) of just 1 photo.
Include your opinion on his work.
NO copy is required on this page.

9. Peer-assessment Rankin written analysis:
First, get a photocopy of your analysis and put your name on the top.
Now, pass your photocopy to someone else in the room.
Person 1 – read the analysis and in green pen, highlight any mistakes in spelling, punctuation and grammar as well as underlining any areas which you feel don’t make sense.
Now pass the photocopy onto another person in the room.
Person 2 - read this analysis and do the same activity again but this time use a blue pen.
Now, return the sheet to it’s owner and have a read through. Any final mistakes you can see should be made in red pen.
