News from Room 211 Our Month What’s Coming Up Notices Mrs. Leary
Month Ending December 31, 2018 Our Month What’s Coming Up December was a busy month in Room 211. We celebrated an “Hour of Code” by coding during library and technology. Right before vacation, our family traditions/ancestry projects were due, and we had fun sharing them with our learning buddies. We also went ice skating at the Foxboro Sports Center. Lastly, two of our classmates showed off their dancing skills at the December assembly. In math, we started unit 3, a measurement unit. Early in the month, the focus was linear measurement, both U.S. customary and metric. Liquid measure (U.S. customary and metric) and weight (U.S. customary and metric) were also taught. In Social Studies we read about the Puritans. We also compared the Pilgrims and the Puritans, looking for similarities and differences. The colonial research project was also introduced, and students have started their We completed our realistic fiction unit. Early in the month, we changed our focus to informational text. We started the month by learning about non-fiction text features and their uses. We continued to explore changes in motion. This month, we experimented with twirly-birds and tops. We also did a STEM activity – solving a classroom problem with magnets. Math – Unit 3 is the month’s focus. We’ll continue to work with time after our return from vacation. During the last part of the unit, we’ll be reading and creating graphs. Science – After vacation, we’ll use the design engineering process to create carts. This will wrap up our study of motion. Our next unit is weather and climate. Learning how weather moves around the globe is one of our big concepts. Social Studies – Students will continue researching colonial life. Working in small teams, they will create a poster to demonstrate their learning. ELA – We’ll continue informational writing this month. Students will be writing non-fiction text in conjunction with the colonial life research project. Notices Thank you to the students and families of Room 211 for your very thoughtful and generous holiday gifts. I was able to purchase some new books, and I’m sure they will be signed out quickly. I hope everyone had a nice vacation week! Our Moose Hill field trip is the third week of January. If you have not returned the permission slip, please do so as soon as possible. Magnets were used to close a locker tightly and also to store books in the crowded library Mrs. Leary
