1 Types of Selection Artificial Natural
Organisms are selected based on certain trait(s) and are bred to ensure offspring have desired trait(s). Organisms that have certain traits that allow them to survive will pass these trait(s) to their offspring. Larger fruits Different breeds of dogs Coat color in different animals Cacti store water

13 4 Basic Principles of Natural Selection Reproductive Advantage
Variation Heritability Overproduction Individuals in a population differ from one another Variations are inherited from parents Populations produce more offspring than can survive Variations allow certain organisms to be more successful and pass their traits on Different sized sunflower Ways of dealing with temperature Tall sunflowers produce tall sunflowers Animals with thick coats produce animals with thick coats Sunflower produce # of seeds; most won’t germinate Not all thick coated animals make adulthood Success depends on ecosystem

20 The Sixth Extinction About 30,000 species go extinct every year
Based on our current biodiversity crisis, some scientists have concluded that we are currently in a mass extinction that has been called “the sixth extinction”. We are losing about 30,000 species off our planet every year and as we’ve seen today, that would be fine if we were making 30,000 new species to replace them, but we aren’t. The new species we are getting also tend to be those that are pests or parasitic to humans. The Sixth Extinction About 30,000 species go extinct every year

Adaptations = Trait that increases an organisms chance of survival Physical Behavioral ? ? Fitness = Ability of an organism to survive and reproduce in it’s specific environment
