Types of Energy Energy has no volume and no mass and it is the capacity to do work or generate heat. It is a scalar quantity – has magnitude but no direction Units of energy are joules where 1 joule = 1 kg·m2/s2 = 1 N·m (Newton-meter); same as for work
2
Types of Energy Kinetic
-movement energy, energy of motion, anything that moves has kinetic energy Potential -stored energy that can eventually become kinetic energy, includes gravity and stretchable elastic objects like rubber bands and springs
3
Types of Energy Mechanical
-energy that results in anything physically moving
4
Types of Energy Electromagnetic (which includes): Electrical
-current flowing, converts easily into other forms of energy Light -from anything luminous such as the Sun, light bulbs, and fire
5
Types of Energy Sound -anything noisy gives off sound energy like your voice, speakers, and instruments Thermal -heat energy, or energy involved with particle motion
6
Types of Energy Chemical
-energy stored and released in chemical bonds, found in food, fuels, and batteries Nuclear -energy stored and released in the nuclei of atoms, found in the Sun and nuclear power plants

Where’s Your Energy From?
Consider the fact that you are able to do work in the world. Where does your energy ultimately come from? Fill in the flow chart below with the following words: Mechanical Energy Chemical Energy Electromagnetic Energy Nuclear Energy You moving around is an example of: You get the energy to move from food which is a form of: The energy from the food you eat ultimately came from the Sun which is in the form of: The Sun produces its energy from the collision of atoms which is an example of:
