Program Goals To provide opportunities for interns to engage in observations and critical analysis of administrative management and leadership under the guidance of practicing administrative educators. To provide opportunities for interns to develop attitudes, skills and knowledge about the application of their own management and leadership proficiencies.

Program Objectives Develop a further understanding of the NC Standards for School Executives. Develop an understanding of the basic principles of school planning, including effective strategic planning and collaborative site-based decision-making. Develop an understanding of resource allocation in the areas of money, time, and space. Develop knowledge of the principles of effective personnel recruitment, selection, induction, socialization, and continuous renewal of educators.

Program Objectives, cont.
Identify, and develop strategies that support and challenge the emergence of formal and informal leadership. Develop an understanding and technical skills related to instructional improvement in a school-wide setting, as supported through teacher evaluation and performance improvement. Develop the ability to establish effective interpersonal relationships with administrators, teachers, students, parents and supervisor, using effective communication techniques and strategies.

Three Internship Seminars Per Semester
A chance to learn and connect with local leaders. An opportunity to talk about experiences, work in the course and focus on a Hallmark (HM) project. These are 90 minutes in length and allow for dialogue Six seminars (three per semester) as follows: Fall 5:30pm- Randall #2005 Spring Tuesday, Aug. 28 (HM 1) Tuesday, Jan. 22nd (HM 4) Tuesday, Oct. 9th (HM 2) Tuesday, Feb. 5 (HM 5 & 6) Tuesday, Dec. 4th (HM 3) Tuesday, May 7

Time Frame Interns will report to assigned schools for the fall internship on August 1, 2012. They will follow the public school schedule as an administrator. They will remain at the fall site until the last teacher workday in December 2012. Interns will report to their assigned schools for the spring internship on January 2, 2013. They will remain at the spring site through May 31, 2013, despite officially graduating earlier in May.

Time frame, cont. Interns that are employed are expected to complete 1000 hours of administrative duties to complete full-time requirements, as well as fulfill their job expectations. All interns must complete their internships in a public school setting.

Expectations The intern should . . .
Play an active role in the work, participating fully. Be professional at all times. Continually monitor communications ( ), coursework, and all requirements. The site principal can help by . . . Introducing the intern to the school community (meetings, nametag, etc.). Easing them into the role (shadow, supervise, monitored independence). Allow them to see the entirety of the role. Work with them to address concerns, notify UNCW if needed

Program Requirements Full-time interns (such as Principal Fellows) are expected to participate in site-based activities for four days per week during the fall semester and four days per week during the spring. The four days can be negotiated between the mentoring principal, intern, and university supervisor.
