30,000 fires are set between 1973 and 1977
Youth unemployment reaches 60%
African American, Afro-Caribbean and Latino families move into the formerly Jewish, Irish and Italian neighborhoods. White youth gangs then preyed on the new arrivals in the streets and in the schoolyard. Minority gangs form first for self-defense.

16. The Master of Records Afrika Bambaataa
Real name unknown, probably born in April 1957.
As a youth he became a prominent member of the Black Spades gang. But was known for being able to cross territories and make friends.

Began to DJ by learning from Ex-gang members.
After traveling to Africa he transformed his gang ties into a peace organization called the "Zulu Nation."

Afrika Bambaataa was known as the “Master of Records” this was due to his eclectic style of production, mixing together funk, soul, rock, world music and all other influences to form new works.
