2. SCBPS MISSION
Improve our understanding of beach sand transport by waves and currents.
Improve local and regional management of sandy shorelines.
Coastal tourism contributes to > $200 million/year to the local economy (Ashford)
Coastal erosion affects 86% of the coast of California (Griggs & Savoy, 1985)
Sea level rising from 9 to 88cm by year 2100.
Coastal erosion threatens public and private safety and property.

Started in May 2002 at the same time as the SANDAG Beach Replenishment Project. First area of in-situ surveys was at Torrey Pines.
Develop predictive capabilities about beach erosion:
Buoys – give us detailed history of wave conditions.
