2 Paired Verbal Fluency Partner B Partner A
This is a disciplinary literacy strategy that supports student learning through productive dialogue. It will be used to help students reflect on the linear data experiments from Days 1 & 2 and serve as a bridge for learning on Days 3 & 4.

3 Paired Verbal Fluency A ~ B ~ A 15s ~ 30s ~ 45s Partner B Partner A
Students need to pair up. One is A and the other is B. The following slide about Batman and Superman may be used to demonstrate how the strategy works. You’ll need 2 volunteers who don’t mind talking in front of the class.

4 Paired Verbal Fluency Explain whether you think Superman or Batman is the better superhero. Be sure to tell why you think so. Partner A Partner B Time the partners. In this example: Partner A speaks about the prompt for 15 seconds. At the end of 15 seconds, call “Switch!” Partner B speaks about the prompt for 30 seconds, trying to add to the dialogue without repeating anything Partner A already said. At the end of 30 seconds, call “Switch!” Partner A finishes the round and speaks about the prompt for 45 seconds. Again, Partner A tries to add to the dialogue without repeating anything that has already been said. At the end of 45 seconds, call “Switch!”

5 FUNNY HOW SO MANY PEOPLE ASSUME SUPERMAN COULD EASILY BEAT ME BASED ON THE FACT THAT I ONLY HAVE MONEY, TECHNOLOGY, BRAINS AND NO SUPERPOWERS. Just for fun… @batsvsupes

6 SUPERMAN’S LONG TIME ARCH NEMESIS IS LEX LUTHOR.
BUT… SUPERMAN’S LONG TIME ARCH NEMESIS IS LEX LUTHOR. A MAN WHO ONLY HAS MONEY, TECHNOLOGY, BRAINS AND NO SUPERPOWERS. @batsvsupes

7 What questions do you have about Paired Verbal Fluency?
Answer any questions students have about using the strategy.

8 Paired Verbal Fluency 2 rounds Partner B Partner A 1st: A ~ B ~ A
15s ~ 30s ~ 45s 2nd: B ~ A ~ B Partner A Partner B Explain to students that there will be two rounds. Each will have a prompt. Each time, both students will have time to talk about the prompt. Round 1: A ~ B ~ A 15s ~ 30s ~ 45s Round 2: B ~ A ~ B

9 Paired Verbal Fluency Round 1: A ~ B ~ A 15s ~ 30s ~ 45s Partner B
Partner A Partner B Round 1: A ~ B ~ A 15s ~ 30s ~ 45s

10 Think about the experiments you completed.
What did you learn from doing them?

11 Paired Verbal Fluency Round 2: B ~ A ~ B 15s ~ 30s ~ 45s Partner B
Partner A Partner B Round 2: B ~ A ~ B 15s ~ 30s ~ 45s

12 Think about the experiments you completed.
How did the graphs help you better understand the data?
