Presentation on theme: "Chromosomal Mutations"— Presentation transcript:

1 Chromosomal Mutations
Deletion -A deletion involves the removal of a whole section of a chromosome, leaving much less information than before -The information is permanently removed and not transferred anywhere else -Often lethal due to the loss of so much information

2 Chromosomal Mutations
Inversion -An inversion involves the “inversion” of genetic information; it is switched around on the same chromosome

3 Chromosomal Mutations
Duplication -Duplication is the repeating of a segment within a chromosome -usually no consequences except heightened gene expression

4 Chromosomal Mutations
Insertion -During insertion, part of one chromosome is removed and placed into another chromosome -This differs slightly from a deletion in that the removed section is given to another chromosome

5 Chromosomal Mutations
Translocation -Two chromosomes are involved in translocation -Part of one chromosome is switched with part of another chromosome -usually no harmful effects; much like crossing-over

6 Chromosomal Mutations
Causes -Can be caused by radiation causing breaking points in the DNA -unequal crossing over -mitotic recombination

7 Mutations Comparison Compare and contrast chromosomal mutations with mutations that occur on a sequence of DNA below: Chromosomal Mutations DNA Mutations
