Many of the workers are limited English speaking immigrants and communication is often difficult with the residents. We can also see a meaningful role for residents, by training them as tutors to support the learners. Say: How would PSA deliver such a project?

Pilot project - selected learners and tutors ….
Power Point Presentation: Time: Start Slide 4: 1:08 end: 1:09 (1 minute) Resources: -Power Point slide (above) Producer Support: -Write in the chat: Hi, new participant, can you hear the presenter? Leader: Say: PSA is considering options to deliver such a project. One option, PSA would start with a small pilot project, with a select group of learners and tutors. We would take only the most motivated learners and tutors. We would plan a short time commitment, 6-8 weeks with pre/post assessment. Possibly, part of a research project. Another option, PSA could participate as a component of a public institution’s grant proposal. We could take a component that is not the main mission of the institution, but it improves the quality of the grant application.

Leader: Say: To test the waters on identifying a project, PSA approached Regents Point, a retirement community in Southern California. We learned that the community offered a traditional tutoring program, and was facing challenges tutors and workers were participating in a tutoring program. They had an ESL text, and the employer is allowing one hour per week for tutoring. Say: However, the learners are dropping out and the tutors are not seeing progress. Say: What are the issues you can you imagine exist in a traditional tutoring program? Do: show chat Say: Please write your thoughts in the Chat on the slide. I will give you a minute. Say: (read) Some barriers mentioned by you are…… Say: PSA came up with our own list of barriers much like yours, and believe we have a solution to the barriers to an effective tutoring program.
