Safe Procedures for Working with Horses
By maintaining safe practices and procedures when working with horses you will be better protected from hazards and risks associated with the horse environment. Safe procedures can be standards, recommendations or a specific method of performing tasks that have been put in place by management of an establishment or by governing industry bodies (i.e., Australian Horse Riding Centres). Safe procedures may include:- wearing appropriate clothing (enclosed footwear, sun protection) using equipment and gear for the task it was designed for tying horses up when grooming, saddling, unsaddling, cleaning stables and performing other routine husbandry activities tying horses up to baling twine to reduce the risk of injury to the horse or damage of equipment in the event of a horse pulling back/away restricted access or staff only areas what to do in the event of a fallen rider what to do in the event of a loose or injured horse As a staff member or volunteer at and horse establishment you may find you are required to uphold and demonstrate these safe work practices and procedures. And during your role you may find you need to advise another, less experienced person on how to perform a task safely. When providing instructions or guidance to another person ensure you explain why the task is performed in this manner (keep in mind that different horse establishments will have different ways of doing things and that it doesn’t necessarily make one method or the other incorrect) and what hazards and risks could arise if it performed differently.
21
Policies and Procedures
An establishment or horse environment should regularly review policies and procedures to keep them up to date and relevant. Policies and procedures outline rules and provide guidance on systems of work and performing tasks as is seen suitable by management. These guidelines assist in identifying hazards and risks and how to conduct yourself and perform your work to minimise these hazards and risks. Policies and procedures will also provide information on what action to take in the case of an emergency. Emergencies can be environmental (fire, flood), horse related (wounds) and people/rider related (falls). Even the smallest details can present or develop into an emergency situation if appropriate action is not taken. For example a handler which has been stood on may still be able to walk despite having fractured a bone in the foot (different people have different thresholds for pain) or a horse which has gone off its feed may be suffering from more serious digestive upsets. For these reasons it is important to follow guidelines and practices put in place with diligence.
