5 British Canoeing Educational Philosophy
British Canoeing believes in a participant led approach when creating and enabling experience from which people will enjoy, learn and develop through paddlesport. The Coach Award courses are designed to support coaches to deliver safe, engaging, empowering and enjoyable paddlesport sessions with the paddler at the heart of the process; whilst also fostering a sense of a paddling community and supporting the inherent social aspects of the sport. We hope through this approach that paddlers will achieve and celebrate success (this success being focused on the journey and not the destination). The aspirant coaches’ experience should also be safe, engaging and enjoyable, with the paddler guiding their own learning and development. Our course Tutors and Assessors should deliver the programme using a supportive and empowering approach to instil an active passion for both paddlesport and coaching. Whilst meeting individual needs, fostering a sense of a paddling community, and developing understanding and respect for the environment in which paddlesport takes place.

7 On the 1st January 2018, the Level 1, 3 and 4 awards will be rebranded.
At this stage, no changes are being made to our Level 1 award, although it is to be rebranded as ‘Paddlesport Instructor’. This qualification will remain the recommended option for all coaches and instructors whose main focus of work is delivering introductory paddlesport sessions. An Instructor who holds both Paddlesport Leader and Paddlesport Instructor being well placed to fulfil their coaching duties with more autonomy. We expect this combination to be the main route followed by Instructors working in the activity centre market.  Coach Educators who currently deliver the Level 1 will be able to continue to deliver the Level 1/Paddlesport Instructor in 2018. There will be a review on the Paddlesport Instructor in 2018 with possible changes to be implemented in 2019. No changes are being made to our Level 3 or 4 awards, although they are being rebranded. The Level 3 qualifications are to be renamed “Performance [insert discipline] Coach”. The “Level 4 in Performance Paddlesport” is also to be renamed “British Canoeing Coaching Diploma”.   Any certificates issued in 2018 will have the rebranded names.

8 The Paddlesport Leader Award launched in April 2017 and is aimed at paddlers taking on formal leadership responsibilities in benign, sheltered water environments and aims to support Leaders to run safe, quality, enjoyable trips based on their group’s needs and aspirations. No formal training required. Only a 1 day First Aid and membership are needed to register for assessment. Moderate Water Leader is the genre name for the rebrand of the 4 Star… 4 Star Sea becomes Sea Kayak Leader, 4 Star White Water becomes White Water Kayak Leader… The rebranded names DO NOT contain the words ‘Moderate Water’. Advanced Water Leader is the genre name of the rebranded 5 Star. 5 Star Sea becomes Advanced Sea Kayak Leader, 5 Star Canoe becomes Advanced Canoe Leader. The Guide Endorsement launched in April The Guide modules are open to anyone. To be endorsed as a Guide, candidates need to complete 3 Guide modules or APL. They will then need to be signed off by a Guide Provider in order to become an endorsed Guide. The Rafting Qualifications have been brought into line with British Canoeing Leadership awards in terms of paperwork. These are offered in England and Wales. Further details of all the above can be found on the BC website.

14 The three Paddle Awards are for those getting into a boat for the first time, enabling them to feel confident in their chosen craft in a sheltered water environment. The awards help empower the paddler, enabling them to start their lifelong journey into paddlesport. The awards are designed to encourage those who get in a boat for the first time, to take on their next step, by taking a Paddle Discover and Paddle Explore, which providers will play a key role in shaping.

15 Each of the 12 disciplines has three awards.
Five new disciplines have been introduced including Stand Up Paddleboard, Polo, Racing, Rafting and Slalom, which means there is something for everyone. With a range of different environments and crafts, this enables the individual to make choices on the type of craft and environment they wish to paddle. All of the awards are direct entry. Paddlers can choose which award they would like to work towards, developing their skills and decision making. There are no direct links to Coaching and Leadership qualifications as prerequisites. The awards do provide appropriate milestones and acknowledgement of personal skills, setting up the paddler appropriately for British Canoeing Coaching and Leadership qualifications. There are no age restrictions for any of the awards. Providers should check paddlers’ suitability, as well as having appropriate mechanisms for anyone under 18. All of the awards have been created and written with the paddler at the heart of the content and creates empowerment and ownership.

16 Course content for every award will be released in the autumn 2018
Course content for every award will be released in the autumn The course content is paddler focused, rather than written for the Provider.

17 The Personal Performance Awards will be available from 2nd January Until then, keep an eye on the British Canoeing Awarding Body website as well as the Catch Up with Coaching newsletter.
