5 Concept Development Author’s purpose is his or her reason for writing: to entertain, to inform, or to persuade. Entertain – to enjoy Inform – to tell or teach information Persuade – to convince someone to agree with you CFU: Define ‘author’s purpose’ What does inform mean? What does persuade mean? What does entertain mean?

Writers attempt to convince the reader of their opinion. Example: I think the Hampton Lunchroom should choose healthier and more delicious selections for lunch. Most students will agree with me that school lunches taste nasty, and they would rather eat at home. Often the food is cold and tasteless, even the pizza. 9 SKILL DEVELOPMENT Authors write for three purposes:
To Entertain: Writers present a story for enjoyment. To Inform: Writers tell or teach information. To Persuade: Writers attempt to convince the reader of their opinions. #1: Read the text carefully. #2: While reading, look for as many clues/characteristics as possible that will help you identify the purpose of the text and record on your graphic organizer. #3: Ask yourself, “Do these clues entertain, inform or persuade the reader?” Record author’s purpose on your graphic organizer. Fox saw Crow in a tree. Crow was holding a piece of cheese in his beak, and Fox wanted the cheese very much. Fox said, “ If the Crow could sing, he would be the king of all birds!” Crow very much wanted to be the king of all birds. So he opened his mouth to sing. The cheese fell to the ground, and Fox quickly ate it. In some cultures, griots memorized all of the important events in a village’s history. A griot would remember, for example, the births, deaths, and marriages in a village. A griot introduced himself as a keeper of history, a teacher and a storyteller, and told a group of children a story of a fisher who decided to trick many people who were trying to get to the market. The fisher shook a log to convince each person it was unsafe to cross with so much merchandise. Finally, the ones who were tricked discovered what the fisher was up to and decided to trick him. AS the fisher crossed the bridge, they shook the log so hard that he fell into the water. On the riverbank, the people the fisher had tricked laughed and laughed. And late that day they ate a fine fish dinner!
