Camera Terminology This is the terminology that the exam board says you should learn. The ones in blue are the most important to learn. The ones in white are for higher grades. Close up Framing a head, hand etc Medium shot Framing half a body etc Long shot Taken from a distance (whole body shot) Extreme close up eg framing an eye Two shot A shot with two characters in it Establishing shot Shot at the start of sequence to set scene Pan Camera moves on horizontal axis Tilt Camera moves on vertical axis Zoom Camera moves to closer view of subject Reverse zoom Camera moves away from subject High angle shot Camera looks down on subject Low angle shot Camera looks up at subject Focus Camera makes part of frame very clear Framing What is selected to be seen by angle of camera Canted angle camera is placed in a tilted position to the ground. Can give a sense of imbalance or instability Aerial shot Camera looks down to the ground Steadicam Camera operator wears a harness to reduce jerkiness Crane shot Camera is mounted on crane and moves around Hand held Camera operator holds camera freely Point of view Shot seen from the eyes of one of the character Shallow focus only one plane of an image is in focus in order to focus the audience's attention Focus pull Change between focusing on object in foreground and background Tracking shot Camera is placed on a dolly and moves along tracks on ground Copy this terminology to keep in your folder

Sample Exam Question Explain how the camerawork is used in this extract to create tension for the audience.
7
Watch extract again Pick out an example of interesting camera use and draw the shot on paper Underneath write down Name of shot type (U-F grade) Why is it used? (F -D grade) How does it create tension? (C-A* grade)
8
Full marks answer A point of view, long shot is shown from Anakin’s perspective. From this the audience can see the space in front and to the side of Anakin’s pod. The great speed that he is travelling becomes obvious and the close proximity of the other pods around him show the danger that he is in. The point of view shot encourages the audience to identify with Anakin and thereby to want him to win. The audience will then feel the same tension as Anakin as they anticipate the end of the race and want to know who will win. Copy this slide to put in your folder
