Telescopes Chapter 7 Lesson 1
2
What are the Regions of the Electromagnetic Spectrum
Electromagnetic radiation-energy that can travel through space in the form of waves Visible light- the light you can see Spectrum- white light that has been shined through a prism and creates a range of different colors according to their wavelengths
3
What are Telescopes and How Do They Work?
Telescopes- instruments that collect and focus light and other forms of electromagnetic radiation They make distant objects appear larger and brighter Optical telescope- uses lenses or mirrors to collect and focus visible light 2 types of optical telescopes Refracting telescope- uses convex lenses to gather and focus light Reflecting telescope- uses a curved mirror to focus light
4
Telescopes Refracting and Reflecting Telescopes
A refracting telescope uses convex lenses to focus light. A reflecting telescope uses a curved mirror to focus light.
5
Telescopes Refracting and Reflecting Telescopes
What are the similarities and differences between the two?
6
Other Telescopes Observatory- building that contains one or more telescopes usually located at tops of mountain tops Radio telescope- direct radio waves from objects in space Use curved reflecting surfaces X-Ray Telescopes- usually located in space collect x-rays from very hot opjects in space
7
Telescopes Where do the Optical, Radio and X-ray telescopes work best?
