Purpose: To allow students to engage in a dialogue with whatever they are reading Novel, textbook, article, etc. Alternate name: dialectic journal (think dialogue)

Student response (Word Count) “But when the ‘thing’ is right there in front of me, and I can kick it, grab it, shout it out, jump into it, paint it…it’s like I’m a puppet on a string, powerless to resist.” Page 2 Ungifted by Gordan Korman (P) –Predict When Donovan says he’s. “a string on a puppet,” it makes me think that he’s about to do something that will get him into some major trouble. Why else would he go through the trouble of explain how hard it is for him to stay out of trouble?

Ways to respond: (Q) Question – ask about something in the passage that is unclear (C) Connect – make a connection to your life, the world, or another text (P) Predict – anticipate what will occur based on what’s in the passage (CL) Clarify – answer earlier questions or confirm/disaffirm a prediction (R) Reflect – think deeply about what the passage means in a broad sense – not just to the characters in the story/author of the article. What conclusions can you draw about the world, about human nature, or just the way things work? (E) Evaluate - make a judgment about what the author is trying to say
