Heroine or Villain A play which I have studied for the purposes of my Leaving Cert course is “Big Maggie” by John B Keane. The protagonist in this earthy play is Big Maggie Polpin herself. A lot of people would describe big Maggie as a formidable, pugnacious and belligerent character, however, I feel that she only possesses these qualities because of the hardships she had to overcome in her life. Maggie Polpin has four children who she successfully steers out of the way of ending up with a miserable life in which she lead. Maggie Polpin also overcame a marriage of hardship and misery. These are the reasons as to why I would consider Maggie to be a heroic character rather than a Villain. Based on the obstacles she creates for her children towards achieving any form of happiness along with her disheartening qualities, I would describe Maggie Polpin as an evil, scheming and vindictive villain.
