Every student has the opportunity to change the world in unique and valuable ways.

3 What is a scholarship? A form of student financial aid that does not need to be repaid. Grants and scholarships are often called “gift aid” because they are free money Grants are usually need-based Scholarships are usually merit-based (based on outstanding academic performance)

5 Important NOCE Scholarship Program Dates:
Application Deadline March 15, 2019 Application Review March 18, 2019 through March 22, 2019 Scholarship Award Recognition: End of June 2019 (To be announced at a later date)

6 Paper - Steps to Apply an NOCE Scholarship
Download the application (notice the application includes an instructor section & signature: student enrollment verification) Complete the application on your computer and then save and print it for submission Complete the essay on the computer - save and print it Important Note - Each scholarship application must have a different essay. If you apply for more than one scholarship you must write a new essay to answer the specific essay prompts for that essay. Duplicate essays will disqualify a scholarship application. Collect the required documents (if applicable): The educational plan A letter of recommendation from one of your instructors Transcripts Clip all your documents together with the application on top and turn it in at one of the three Admissions and Records counters by the Scholarship Application Deadline: March 15, 2019 by 4 p.m. Important Note - Incomplete scholarship packets will not be reviewed

7 Online - Steps to Apply an NOCE Scholarship
Go to NOCE website: Click on the link of the scholarship you qualify for. Carefully review and print description and requirements for the scholarship you desire to apply for. Under Scholarship Application tab: click on “Online Scholarship Application”. Complete the student personal information. Complete the Essay Writing Prompt of the specific scholarship in a Word format separately.  Ask others (peers, instructors, counselors, and/or mentors) to proof read your essay prompt, and make proper revisions as needed.  Then cut and paste onto your application. Note: If you apply for more than one scholarship you must write a new essay to answer the specific essay prompts for that essay. Ask one of your instructors to complete Student Enrollment Verification form. Student can download a hard copy, print and complete their student information, and give the form to the instructor to complete the enrollment verification part. Once students obtain the enrollment form from the instructor, they need to scan the form, to submit/attach to the scholarship (Genius Scan app can be used to scan documents). Or students can send the online version to the instructor. Copy and send the link to the instructor. You will receive an confirming that your instructor has completed the form. Gather all required documents for the specific scholarship (e.g. letter of recommendation, educational plan, transcripts, etc.) and attach them to the given scholarship address.

8 Where/When to Submit the Application
Submit online all Scholarship Applications no later than March 15, 2019. Submit paper Scholarship Applications no later than March 15, 2019 by 4 p.m. at one of the three Admissions and Records counters. Applications are open from February 4, 2019 through March 15, 2019. External Scholarships applications and deadlines (Fullerton Foundation NOCE Honors, Kaye Lennon, Zuniga Kiki, and APIA) must be mailed to a specific committee or board for review. (check the NOCE website) Deadline: Fullerton Foundation NOCE Honors: April 1, 2019 at 4:30 PM. Kaye Lennon: March 15, 2019 Zuniga Kiki: March 15, 2019 by 5:00 p.m. APIA Scholarship: April 12, 2019 by 4:30 p.m.

9 Scholarships will not be considered if:
The application form is incomplete Required documents are not included Deadline is not met

10 Essay Tips Use black ink Use margins Computerize or write neatly
Promote your best qualities Write in short, complete sentences Organize paragraphs Respond to all prompts (questions) Include how you meet qualifications Write full responses Give examples and be specific Write interesting points Write clear, concise words Write logically Read it aloud – make edits Let an instructor read it Edit and Rewrite

11 How to Write an Essay Introduction paragraph
3-5 sentences Body: include all essay required questions Include support, such as examples that address the essay prompt (guide) Could be 2-3 paragraphs or more if needed Conclusion (one paragraph)

13 Be sure to: Follow Directions Use correct spelling
Present a well written essay Provide complete information Answer all questions Meet the deadlines Respond the prompts Express complete thoughts Write logically Submit the student enrollment verification form to your instructor ahead of time Only complete packets will be reviewed

14 Most Common Application Mistakes
Missing deadlines Failing to proofread the application Failing to follow directions (essay length, number of recommendations) Omitting required information Applying for an award when you don’t qualify Failing to follow essay questions Writing an essay that doesn’t let the reader gain any insight into knowing you (your goals, your obstacles, your background, your circumstances).
