William the Conqueror In 1066 AD William of Normandy conquered England
William brought along with him The Feudal System (or Feudalism) from France Feudalism was based on “3 Fs” Fief (Land) Fealty (Loyalty) Faith (Religion)

Fief (Land) Land in medieval times was broken up into fiefs
Fiefs were given to military men as rewards, fiefs came with certain obligations: You had to promise loyalty You had to provide military service You had to act as a host You had to give money You had to provide gifts Most fiefs would be located near a stream or other form of water source.
7
Feudal Contract Based on a contract
The King granted fiefs to faithful nobles In return, they promised the King their loyalty and became vassals They had to… Serve for the kings army (certain number of days a year- around 40) Supply knights to king at times of war Serve the King’s court and give political advice Give the King money for specail events

Workers on the Manor There were two groups of peasant workers on the manor Freeholders - skilled workers who paid rent and could leave the manor whenever they wished. (They usually had a skill needed by others on the manor.) Serfs – workers bound to the land by contract with the nobles. (They had no freedom - they where the noble’s property.)
