4 How did the Stamp Act lead to the American Revolution?
Great Britain took on enormous debt to pay for the French and Indian War. Great Britain passed this debt to colonists in the form of taxes, particularly the Stamp Act. The Stamp Act required all colonists to pay a tax on every piece of printed paper they used—even playing cards! The actual cost of the Stamp Act was relatively small. What made the law so offensive to the colonists is the standard it seemed to set. The Stamp Act was seen as a direct attempt by England to raise money in the colonies without the approval of the colonial legislatures. The colonists were worried that, if this new tax were allowed to pass without resistance, the door would be open for more troublesome taxation in the future.

5 Rebellion Begins “Give all power to the many, and they will oppress the few. Give all power to the few, they will oppress the many. Both therefore ought to have power, that each may defend itself against the other.” -Alexander Hamilton Alexander Hamilton Story of Tonight

7 Review Questions What were three effects of the French and Indian War?
(1) Great Britain incurred a huge war debt and started taxing the colonists (2) Proclamation of 1763; (3) British soldiers continued to remain in the colonies What was the Proclamation of 1763? Why was it such an issue? This document created a line along the crest of the Appalachian Mountains and forbade any settlement west of the line. Those already settled to the west were forced to leave. Or, they just stayed anyway and hoped for the best. 3. What was the Stamp Act? Why did it anger the colonists? Great Britain placed a tax on all paper items, including playing cards, actual paper, licenses, newspapers, official documents, etc. This was an irritant more than anything; the colonists didn’t like being taxed without representation and were afraid if they let this go, they would be opening themselves up for more taxes later. *
