4 History 1851–1890: Building on the Great Exhibition, Prince Albert supported the idea of South Kensington becoming the London Centre for Science and Arts. Constituent Colleges formed. 1907: Imperial College founded by merger of: City and Guilds College Royal College of Science Royal School of Mines 1987: Management School formed (now Imperial College Business School)

5 History 1988–2000: Mergers with:
St Mary’s Hospital Medical School National Heart and Lung Institute Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School and Royal Postgraduate Medical School 2007: Formation of Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and the Academic Health Science Centre. 2007: Imperial becomes independent of the University of London in its centenary year. 2013: Vision for the White City Campus is launched.

7 Global Imperial Imperial is the UK’s most international university (5th in the world) according to Times Higher Education. Around 60% of students and 40% of staff come from outside the UK. 13 New White City Campus The College’s major new campus, co-locating world class researchers, businesses and higher education partners to create value from ideas. It is a 23 acre site in White City, approximately 500m from our Hammersmith Campus. The I-HUB, which opened in autumn 2016, co-locates research and business in a dynamic, enterprising environment. The Molecular Science Research Hub (MSRH), a new research home for the Department of Chemistry, opened in June 2018. The Michael Uren Biomedical Engineering Research Hub will house a clinical facility side-by-side with multidisciplinary laboratories and offices for translational research initiatives, providing patients access to the latest innovations in healthcare. 14 Research collaborations
External collaborations and partnerships allow Imperial to develop the quality, reach and impact of its research. CERN – Geneva Imperial physicists among those working on experiments to collide sub-atomic particles using Compact Muon Solenoid particle detector. Francis Crick Institute Imperial founder organisation of the Institute which brings together scientists from all disciplines to examine why disease develops and find new treatments. Qatar Carbonates and Carbon Storage Research Centre Collaboration between Imperial, Shell, Qatar Petroleum and Qatar Science and Technology Park – helps to enhance natural gas production.

17 Leadership President Professor Alice Gast took up the role of President on 1 September 2014. The President is Imperial’s Chief Executive. She leads the College’s strategy, including the development of the new campus at White City, and its links to government, industry, philanthropists and alumni. Provost Professor Ian Walmsley FRS is the second Provost of Imperial College London and joined in September 2018 The Provost is responsible for our core academic mission – education, research and translation – and reports to the President.
