Verbal Irony Verbal irony occurs when something is said in which the opposite is intended or something is said in which the opposite is true. Examples e.g. This locker room smells really good. e.g. As a plane experiences turbulence, a passenger says, “This is going to be a pleasant ride.”
6
Dramatic Irony Occurs when the reader or audience knows more than the characters in the story do. This is used to engage the audience and keep them actively involved in the storyline.
7
DRAMATIC IRONY EXAMPLES:
Tim’s parents are proud of the “A” he got on the test, but readers know he cheated. Alex writes a love poem to Judy but we know that Judy loves Devin.
8
Situational Irony Occurs when the opposite of what is expected happens. Examples: Bill Gates uses an Apple computer. The teacher’s daughter is a High School drop out. A fire station goes up in flames
9
Review Irony the difference between what is expected to happen, and what actually does happen. Irony is like a glitch, a twist, or a last minute switch in the game. It is an interruption of events that causes an unexpected outcome.
