Room 23 March 27-31, 2017 Language Arts This week we started a new theme, Look at my Garden Grow! Throughout this theme, we had many discussions about how to grow and take care of a garden. We listened to the story, Tops and Bottoms, and listened for details to help us figure out the main idea of the story. We practiced main idea with our just right books and will continue using this skill next week. Our vocabulary words this week were: finished, seedling, roots Word Study This week we practiced the L blends, such as pl, cl, gl, sl, fl, bl. We learned and practiced with different L blend words. We practiced adding and taking away letters to form new words. We added new words to our word wall. black, their, there Please practice these at home! Please make sure you are reviewing our phonics skills at home. Spelling is becoming much harder for some students. Important Dates: April 3rd: shirts for tye dying due (Plain, white 100% cotton t-shirt bound with rubber bands) April 10-17th: Spring Break/No School April 18th: Tye Dying Parent volunteers arrive at 1:35pm Reminders Weekly reports to be signed and returned Monday. **Please make sure your child is reading at least 10-15 minutes every night, or at least some nights(!), either independently or with an adult! 2 Alternates for the week:
Social Studies We wrapped up our Japan Unit this week with a big celebration on Thursday! Students learned how to use chopsticks, how to write Kanji, made origami and paper lanterns, and learned more about Japanese tea ceremonies. We had a blast! Thank you to the parents that helped run a station!! Science This week we learned about the impact that humans have on earth and brainstormed different ways we could help take care of it. Some students said they would take shorter showers, recycle more, and reuse different objects rather than throwing them away. Math This week we started chapters 13 & 17, Addition and Subtraction to 40 & 100. In these chapters students will learn addition and subtraction with and without regrouping and solve real-world addition and subtraction problems. We started addition regrouping and some students are having a hard time with this concept. It is super important that students practice at home. Please practice addition/subtraction facts with your child at home!
