3 Edward and Mary: Government
Good learning: Recall the key issues Edward/Mary’s governments faced Great learning: Explain whether the issues Edward/Mary’s governments faced constitute a crisis Even better: Evaluate whether there was a ‘Mid Tudor Crisis’ in government. Key Words: Factions In what ways and how effectively was England governed during this period?

4 Mid-Tudor Crisis – was there a crisis in the government during the reigns of Edward and Mary?
What would a ‘crisis in government’ look like during the reigns of Edward and Mary? Crisis – government poses danger to the monarch? Write answers on the board – factionalism, weak leadership (Lord Protectors for Edward)

5 We are going to look at whether there was a crisis in the governments of Edward and Mary. This can be decided using a dart board. There are different ways in which you can measure the problems Edward and Mary’s governments faced (the different colours). The closer you get to the bullseye, the more serious the problem is. TASK – IN YOUR OPINION, WHICH OF THESE COLOURS SIGNIFY A ‘CRISIS’? THIS WOULD MAKE UP YOUR CRITERIA IN AN INTRODUCTION. White – tension between government members/factions Black – one person/faction gaining “too much” power within the government Blue – government members/factions gaining “too much” power over the Monarch Red – Failed coup Yellow – Successful coup

6 Edward and Mary: Government
You have been given a sheet with different events in relation to government under Somerset, Northumberland and Mary. Your job is to decide whether the event constitutes a ‘crisis’ and if so, how. To do this you need to decide whether the event belongs on the dart board, as if so, where – colour code each event to signify where it goes. White – tension between government members/factions Black – one person/faction gaining “too much” power within the government Blue – government members/factions gaining “too much” power over the Monarch Red – Failed coup Yellow – Successful coup

7 Was there a ‘Mid-Tudor Crisis’ in government?
Maybe indicate a decided ‘crisis point’ with the smart board pen? Somerset Northumberland Mary

8 TASK: write an introduction to this question.

Define – any key words Criteria – What would need to happen for there to be a ‘Mid-Tudor Crisis’ in government Judgement – What is your answer to the question? *REMEMBER: In your final exam, a Mid-Tudor essay question would also contain either the end of HVII’s reign, or the beginning of Elizabeth I’s reign!* Could discuss as a class or just peer assess
