(A) Heart transplant from an allogeneic mouse results not only in rejection, but also in the production of antibodies and CD4 T cells directed against cardiac myosin in the recipient. (B) Transplant of allogeneic skin or of a syngeneic heart do not lead to cardiac-specific autoimmunity, indicating that this response is tissue-specific and that an allogeneic response is necessary to break tolerance to cardiac myosin.
